The Unicel FG-1248 Pentair Purex Replacement Filter Grid is compatible with the following DE filters: the Purex/Pentair SMBW2000 series, the SMBW2048 Purex/Pentair SMBW4000 series and the SMBW4048. DE (diatomaceous earth) filters are ideal for the cleanest, most sparkling pool and spa waters because they can trap debris as small as 2 mic to 5 mic (for perspective, a human hair measures between 30 mic and 120 mic). That's why many in the industry call them water polishers. DE filter grids can be cleaned and recoated with DE powder to lengthen their life, but at some point, they become too worn or damaged to be effective, expect a lifespan of 2-years to 3-years. This Unicel replacement, made of spunbonded, 100% polyester material, will require cleaning less often than other filter grids and it will last longer, too.
