A smaller, paler relative of the daffodil, the paperwhite narcissus is a popular plant to grow indoors during winter months. They can also be planted outdoors in the fall but will thrive only in warmer climates, where temperatures stay above 20°F year-round. Paperwhite bulbs are a popular choice for novice gardeners and they typically bloom in late winter. Plant them in clusters in your garden or group in a container for a pretty effect. Paperwhite bulbs can be planted using either soil or preferably just water in many types of containers. They are a great option for growing around the holidays, as they provide welcome household decoration as well as a rich fragrance and are suitable for gift-giving. You can create a lovely shallow base for growing indoor paperwhites in a glass bowl or other container, choosing colorful stones, decorative glass, seashells or marbles to stabilize the bulbs, then filling with water to just the base of the bulbs (to prevent them from rotting). Paperwhite bulbs will produce a number of small, white flowers on multiple stems growing up to 12 in. to 18 in. tall in just a few weeks, if kept in a cool location.
